“We are stronger when we listen, and smarter when we share.” – Rania Al-Abdullah
The world has changed irrevocably in just a few short months. It is vital that your communication keeps pace and adapts to the world we live in now. You may have automated emails, social media posts or pre-booked advertising that was perfectly appropriate when you wrote it, but now may not quite hit the right tone, or could even seem insensitive.
Tweak for relevance. Make sure your messaging reflects life as it is now, so check you don’t have regular posts saying things like “What’s your favourite restaurant right now?” or ‘Who crushed speaking gigs this week?’
Create Comfort. Where relevant use phrases to reinforce the safety of your audience such as ‘virtual’, ‘in-home’, ‘contact-free’ and ‘online’.
Check for insensitive words and phrases such as ‘killer deals’, ‘create contagious content’, ‘let’s go viral’. With social media views at a peak, one small mistake could cost you dearly.
Shift and stay relevant. As the situation changes, adapt your messaging to the ‘new normal’. What’s going on for your customer now?
Stay optimistic – but don’t over promise. Tell then what you do know – a positive but straight-talking approach is much more likely to be well received than ‘internet marketing hype’.
It is perfectly legitimate to market to your audience during a crisis – but make sure you step into their shoes and really reflect life as it is now.
